On 20 August 2026, TLG Foundation joins Associação Casa da Índia and the Centro de Estudos Indianos in presenting Imagining Tagore, a lecture on the global reception of Rabindranath Tagore and the long history of Indo-Chinese cultural exchange.
Subtitled Sinophone Thakurphilia and Inter-Chinese Kolkata: When Tagore tastes Hakka noodle, the talk traces Tagore’s enduring popularity in the Sinophone world and his cross-border presence in other art forms, including cinema.
It turns to the Indo-Chinese spaces of Kolkata — capital of India until 1911 — where Old Chinatown sits close to Jorasanko Thakurbari, and where Cheena Bhavan at Visva-Bharati University, founded on 14 April 1937, became the first sinological institution in India. The lecture closes on the historical connections among Tagore, Satyajit Ray, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Bose.

Professor Albert Wei-Min Tang has researched India’s cinematic visuality, Indo-Chinese cultural connectivity and the Hakka Chinese Indian community. He has visited the “City of Joy” more than fifteen times and serves as President of the Taiwan Association for South Asian Studies.
